Description

BULLOCK, W. Six Months’ Residence and Travels in Mexico, London: John Murray, 1824. Octavo, first edition, pp. xii, 532, plus 15 aquatint plates (four hand-colored costume plates, 11 plates of landscape and seascape views), folding frontis (View of the City and Valley of Mexico), two folding maps, folding table (distances between cities and towns), contemporary marbled paper-covered boards half-bound in black calf, rebacked with dark green calf with a lighter green label, gilt lettering and rules. Very good with former owner’s name inked onto free front endpaper, boards rubbed at extremities, scattered light to moderate foxing. See Sabin 9140, Abbey 666, Palau 37059. Sabin says, “This author was the first English traveler in Mexico since Father Gage, in 1640, to write an account of his travels,” but this is open to question. In any case, the illustration is important and interesting, showing a plan for the City of Mexico based on the map made by Garcia Conde. Bullock was certainly an unusual travel writer, as not only does he describe the daily life and interesting features of the country, but also how he took control of a silver mine in Themascaltepec.
