Description
The first book ever written outside of Japan on the subject, "Atomic Dreams and the Nuclear Nightmare" is the amazing story of how the original 1954 Toho film "Gojira" came about. Included in this tome are the stories behind the making of the film, beginning with its initial inspiration by metaphorically detailing the experiences of Japanese citizens during the last months of 1945 when cities were decimated by United States' fire-bombings (including the notorious Tokyo raid in early March) to the two atomic bombings, as well as the "Lucky Dragon Incident" when the crew of a Japanese tuna-trawler found themselves covered in atomic ash due to a U.S. Naval test at the Bikini Atolls. The book details how producer Tomoyuki Tanaka had his hand forced to make a monster movie when his initial co-international planned production with Indonesia collapsed, motivating him to discover the incredible commercial success of 1953's "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms," as well as the artistic attributes of 1933's "King Kong." It also details how a reluctant second-choice director named Ishiro Honda was ultimately pursued to take on the project, how an enthusiastic special-effect genius named Eiji Tsuburaya jumped at the chance to make his version of "Kong," how an amazing musical score by Akira Ifukube gave the finished film its everlastingly unique and original tone, how one critical role was switched at the last minute, and how a stuntman named Haruo Nakajima gave his all to give a 150-pound costume convincing life. Filled with fascinating photographs, behind-the-scenes stories, and interviews with those who were there along with contemporary reviews, the Rondo-nominated "Atomic Dreams and the Nuclear Nightmare" is a compelling read for both fans and film students. The book will be signed by the author!
