Description

You are bidding on a terrific rare, antique hardcover book titled Chemistry, Metereology and the Function of Digestion - Considered with Reference to Natural Theology. By William Prout, Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. Published by Henry G. Bohn, London, 1855. This is just the Fourth Edition. Has the very scarce hand-colored frontispieces and hand-colored fold-out map! Contents are interesting examples of eclectic science of mid-19th century, including color frontispiece and foldout map. 419 pp. including prefaces, appendices and index. Book is quarter-bound in leather with leather tips. Cover is slightly worn and stained but it still makes this a beautiful book: spine & corners brown calf with heavy marbling of cover, all page edges, and especially bright endpapers with marbellized design. Spine very slightly chipped and rubbed with allover design in gilt and with black title/author area. Ink inscription on 2nd endpaper dated 1869. Light foxing. Otherwise clean and tight. One of a series of volumes which derive their origin and title from the Rev. Francis Henry Egerton, eighth and last Earl of Bridgewater who left funds in his will, after his death in 1829, to fund the publication of one thousand copies of a work: 'On the Power, Wisdom and Goodness of God as manifested in the Creation, illustrating such work by all reasonable arguments as, for instance, the variety and formation of God's creatures, in the animal, vegetable and mineral kingdoms'. Together they represent the state of safe, orthodox science in early Victorian Britain. This title is complete in this one volume and is Treatise 8. Book is attractive and in overall very good condition. A very rare title! Terrific and rare book! Would make a terrific addition to a collection. Wonderful gift idea! Ron’s Book Nook was a complete privilege to do business with. Item was exactly as described, was packaged with extreme care and thoroughness to maintain the integrity of the antique book, communication excellent, and item arrived only a couple of days after purchase. Very satisfied with this transaction (price was reasonable), and would definitely recommend this seller.
