Leather rather scuffed and dried, front joint of Vol. I quite tender and starting to separate along top half of spine edge, flaking of leather to both volumes, light foxing to early leaves, else a Very Good set, internally fresh and sound, issued with the elusive map. Contemporary armorial ex libris of Thos. Smyth to both pastedowns as well as a manuscript note at the end of the Advertisement in Vol. I: "Several citations from Latin authors that were intended for Notes have been inserted in the text by mistake." A highly popular and oft-reprinted account of the author's travels, the "Liveliness of description of manners and scenery, couched in an easy and elegant style, has rendered these volumes extremely popular" (Cox).
