Description
Transcribed from the inside of the now detached rear board. Preface To my Kind and gentle readers, if you are Ardent admirers of the Fine Arts - I humbly beg you will Pardon me for Pointing out to your notice a very life like and agreeable Portrait of Sir Francis Drake also a splendid Specimencee of Charley Howard as he appeared in the Natural of life - and the Inteirated seavasion of SEngland and by the bye a most Capital likeness of Good Queen Betsy and as there is no Index for your guidance and as I have forgotten the number of the page in which these excellent engravings are to be found – I am very sorry dear reader, but if you find them for yourself , you will be all the more Proud for so doing Transcribed from the inside of the now detached rear board. (See photo #4) I believe that this is the author’s own hand, although it is not signed. I believe that his reference to “Inteirated seavasion of SEngland and by the bye a most Capital likeness of Good Queen Betsy” is a reference to the Engraving BETWEEN p 207 and 208: “A view of the Engagement between the English Fleet and the Spanish Invincible Armada at the Start Point near Plymouth” Which is capped by an engraving of Queen Elizabeth I. [SEE Photo 9 and 10) It is true that there is no index and it is also true that the various engravings and the MAP, are NOT page numbered by the printer. There is a MUCH better-than-mine copy of this book presently for sale on Abebooks, where the seller describes the prints and MAP as: Ø Full-page plate of 'Standards, Flags, Colours, &.' facing page 348. Ø A large folding map: 'A compleat Chart of the European Seas from the Gulf of Finland to the Levant', some 22 inches wide by 16 and ¼ inches tall [415 x 550mm] in size, facing page 588. Ø Full-page plate: 'A View of the Engagement between the English Fleet and the Spanish Invincible Armada off the Start Point near Plymouth | B. Cole sculp', facing page 242. Ø Full-page plate: 'Charles Howard, Earl of Nottingham, Lord High Admiral of England | T. Chambers Sculp' facing page 333 and Ø Full-page plate: 'Sr. Francis Drake' facing page 335. My scruffy book is missing pages 105-118; 169-180; 733-744; and 769-772, but it has All the pages after 773. (There is no Index) My book has a scruffy detached frontispiece. (SEE Photo 2] è The MAP in my book is bound-in following p lxii (i.e. bound-in as p 63.) [SEE photos 5, 6 & 7] è The Full-page plate of “Standards, Flags, Colours” is bound-in on hand-numbered p64. [SEE photo 8] è The “View of the Engagement between the English Fleet and the Spanish Invincible Armada off the Start Point near Plymouth” is bound-in on hand-numbered p208. [SEE photo 9] è Full-page plate: “Charles Howard, Earl of Nottingham, Lord High Admiral of England | T. Chambers Sculp” is bound-in between pages 332 and 333, hand-numbered 333t, i.e facing p 333. [SEE photo 11] è Full-page plate: 'Sr. Francis Drake' is bound-in between pages 334 and 335, hand-numbered 335 ½, i.e. facing page 335. [SEE photo 12.] The MAP and the prints form the basis for my suggested "Buy it Now" price, but if you buy this book you will also get nearly 350 sheets of "200 year old" printed text which CAN be used as box linings, decoupage, etc. If no one buys our book, I may extract the complete essay on the Trial of Sir Francis Drake and offer it for sale separately (or with the print of him). Thanks for looking ...... Happy Holidays!
