Description

Jedidiah Morse's American Universal Geography 1802 leather book w/ maps Gridley Jedidiah Morse's American Universal Geography 1802 leather book w/ maps Gridley (Old Books, 19th Century Books, Leather Books, Universal Geography, Morse's American Geography, Ethnography, Books with Maps). The American Universal Geography, or A View of the Present State of All the Empires, Kingdoms, States, and Republics in the Known World, and of the United States of America in Particular, by Jedidiah Morse. Published June, 1802, Boston by Isaiah Thomas and Ebenezer T. Andrews. Vol. 1 only (focusing on the United States). 832 pages. Text in English. Folding world in hemispheres map at front (engrv. by Gridley), half the solar system plate remains, a large portion of the folding "Map of Northern Parts of the United States" map (by Abraham Bradley) remains (bottom is defective), nice folding map of New Hampshire & Vermont (engr. by Gridley), most of the West Indies map remains (left edge frayed with some edge loss), . Attractive antiquarian full leather binding, smooth spine, gilt bands, gilt title lettering on contrasting black leather label. Volume one of a two volume set. Contents of this volume complete unto themselves, the more desirable of the set since this one covers at length all the territories and regions then within the U.S.. Book is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Binding gently age worn but still appealing, leather and joints slightly rubbed but still supple, remains overall very attractive as an object. Text block paper is age toned as typical, some toning and foxing, internally book remains mostly clean, tight and sound. A book which has been taken care of but may/ does not look like new. Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in rather nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws seem easy to overlook or forgive. Please review photos for more detailed attempt to present this rare book as it survives. We often over-describe any flaws that many sellers would not even bother to mention since most people would overlook them as minor and unworthy of comment. Many people tell us the books they receive from us are nicer in person than they appears on the screen. We want you to be clear about what you are buying, so we take numerous photos and try to describe it openly and honestly. Book Measures c. 8 3/4" H x 5 1/2" W. [B11868].

Excellent experience from start to finish! Noah Webster's Collected Essays on Politics, Literature, and Morals (1843) arrived very quickly—much faster than anticipated. The packaging was thorough and secure, ensuring this rare and fragile item was well-protected during transit. The book was exactly as described, with all expected age-related wear clearly noted in the listing. A true gem for any collector. Highly trustworthy seller—thank you for preserving history so well!

A beautiful map, exactly as described and it was very well-packaged. This was in no way the fault of the seller, but once the item departed, it languished in the USPS system for several days without any updated or useful tracking information being provided by USPS. In the end, it arrived four days late. Hardly a deal breaker, but I did pay $8.95 for USPS to scan the item along the way.

My gratitude and sincere appreciation for this wonderful book; i.e., in exceptional condition I might add. Expedient shipping, exceptional packaging, exactly as described as well as exceptional value,…, he never, ever disappoints, straight across the board,…, once again thank you until the next time.
