Description
Original, leatherbound 1834 first U.S. edition of The History & Topography of the United States of North America, From the Earliest Period to the Present Time , by John Howard Hinton. Two volumes bound as one, in full leather with ribbed spine and gilt-embossed lettering. It measures 11" x 9¾" x 3" thick, with 936 pages (428 + 508), plus a map of North America and 35 full-page engraved plates depicting American cities, landmarks, and significant events, as well as an engraved frontispiece and title page in each volume. The title pages were drawn by William Croome, and each is inscribed "...Sold by Periodical Booksellers." The book was published in Boston by Samuel Walker, with additions and corrections by Samuel Lorenzo Knapp. The map locates cities, towns, forts, trading posts, and Indians, as well as rivers and lake. Lake Trimpanogos is labeled "doubtful." The southwestern U.S. is part of Mexico, and present-day Alaska is labeled Russian Territory. The engravings are by various artists and engravers, and include a wide range of views, including "Capitol of Richmond, Virginia," where Hinton was pastor of the First Baptist Church until his views on slavery made him unpopular, and he moved to Chicago. Among the other engravings are Thomas Cole's "Lake George," Alexander Jackson Davis' "Harvard University," and John Trumbull's "Battle at Bunker's Hill." (The full list of engravings is in "Directions for the Binder," on the last page of the book, shown in the scans.) Condition: The book is in very good condition, complete and intact. The cover boards show some wear, the corners are bumped, and there's a short break on the upper edge of the spine. There's scattered foxing on many of the inside pages and a pronounced horizontal crease or dent across the center. A previous owner's name is written on the first title page: "E.K. Browning." Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. This is an original , antiquarian book, published in 1834. It is fully guaranteed to be genuine and authentic in all respects. It is dedicated to Washington Irving, Esq. "with admiration of his talents, high esteem for his character, and gratitude for his encouragement and aid in this undertaking." Later works by John Howard Hinton include History of Baptism (1841) and Lectures on the Prophecies (1843). He died in New Orleans, during the yellow-fever epidemic of 1847. Buy with confidence! Excellent seller! Shipped the same day as I ordered. However, USPS apparently misplaced the package. Let me change excellent seller to exceptional seller because Charlie responded immediately to my inquiry when it was apparent something was wrong, he kept me updated on the progress, and as soon as USPS allowed him to file a missing mail claim he did. And that got the map moving in the system and finally in my hands. Safe, secure packaging, too. I highly recommend New World Maps! Thank you!

This vintage brochure was accurately described. It's like brand new with no damage whatsoever--excellent condition. The price for the brochure and shipping cost was fine. Packaging was excellent. The brochure was sent in a hard stock cardboard envelope, the brochure in a plastic sleeve inside. Shipping was fast. Very happy with this transaction and seller. I would love to find another item to purchase as good as this one.

Packaged adequately for shipment, arrived just a but early, item was in very good condition considering age. Shipping cost was very reasonable. Finding publishing dates on maps can be tricky, but this was a 1947 map as advertised. Good transaction, satisfied customer.
