Complete treaty of man's anatomy comprising operating medicine, with lithographed boards from nature. Sixth volume: operating medicine. [Text] & iconography of surgical anatomy and operating medicine. First division. [Atlas]. Paris, Ca Delaunay publisher, anatomical bookstore, printing of Jules Didot L'Aîné, Imprimerie Lemercier, Bernard et Cie, 1837. 2 volumes [text + atlas]. Folio , 33 x 43.5 cm. Havana half-basin binding , smooth back decorated with nets, titles and golden tomaisons, dishes of marbled paper. Text: 280 pp. ; Atlas: 1 f. (title), 85 p. and 93 plates. Original edition of this volume VI of the treaty (...) of the anatomy of man dedicated to operating medicine, whose atlas is decorated with 93 lithographed boards (in black). This "monument" of medicine remains an essential work, still sought after today. Very rubbed bindings, damaged headdresses and with gaps (Atlas), freckles and brown pages, marginal wetting (gutter and tail) without consequences on the boards in the volume of Atlas, otherwise Solid copy. Bourgery and Jacob's work holds a special place in the history of anatomical atlas. -Put its duration: the publication continued for about 40 years, if we add to the first edition by Delaunay (1831-1854), that of Louis Guérin, enriched with numerous supplements from 1867 to 1871. -Put his perspectives: fully drawn from nature, from dissections, it aims not only to renew the iconography of the human body, but in addition to carry an educational dimension. Thus the part dedicated to operating medicine details the material, the procedures, the required gestures and the anatomical regions concerned for the various operations, carefully described. -Put the mobilization of many actors and trades (anatomists, prosectors, doctors, designers, lithographers, technicians, printers, publishers, patrons, booksellers, etc.), under the leadership of the two project managers, the anatomist doctor Jean -Marc Bourgery and the painter-designer-lithographer Nicolas-Henri Jacob, who play an unprecedented complementary role. Extreme precision and technical quality that is as much aesthetic and scientific of the boards have considerably marked contemporaries, who have readily called it as "masterpieces". "Let us say here that Mr. Bourgery's work is one of the most beautiful that our century will be glorified. To all the facts that the most in -depth historical knowledge could reveal to him, the author joins their own discoveries; And he had the talent of bringing the attention of anatomists back to particularities seen by former authors, but forgotten, or even rejected, by observers less attentive than him. »Ph. The bottom, "Bougery (JM)", in the universe. France: encyclopedic dictionary, vol. 3, Paris, Firmin Didot Frères, 1840-1845, p. 247. Jean-Baptiste Marc Bourgery , born in Orleans in 1797 and died in Paris in 1849, entered the School of Medicine in Paris in 1811. Brilliant pupil of Lamarck and Laennec, external in 1815, internal the following year, he obtained in 1819, the gold medal of the hospitals of Paris. After practicing as a health officer in a copper foundry near Rouen, at the end of his boarding school, he returned to Paris in 1827. He then supported his doctoral thesis on "the use of circular ligatures of members in most periodic diseases", which he dedicated to Guillaume Dupuytren, his mentor. The publication of this work, as well as that of a treaty of small surgery (1828), met with some success. It was thanks to the patronage of Baron Benjamin Delessert that he can then undertake, from 1829, his major work, the complete treaty of the anatomy of man, published between 1831 and 1854 (the last volume, as posthumous), hailed by his peers and many intellectual and artistic personalities (Cuvier, Michelet, Delécluze, Claude Bernard, Hirschfeld…). During the last twenty years of his life, while devoting himself essentially to this monumental work, he studied breathing, the nervous system, the structures of lungs, heart, spleen, thyroid, etc. In addition, Doctor Félix Thibert had entrusted him with the direction of the museum of imitative anatomy, which he had founded on rue du Montparnasse: he produced certain pieces of cardboard, in order to specify and modernize the representations of various visceral lesions ( Until then made in wax). Unhappy candidate in several prestigious positions or functions, he confesses his bitterness towards this lack of recognition in the eighth volume of the treaty ("Today, after twenty years, I am nothing and I'm not waiting Nothing. I'm finished with this singular revelation: it is the cry of twenty years of oppression that escapes me. Also I give my example to flee, if there was some reckless ready to be seduced, as I did, by an inconsiderate love of science. At least he will learn from me that the conscientious work leads to anything. Let me forgive me for this complaint, it is the first, it will also be the last. [Pp. II-III]). Bourgery died in Passy, in June 1849, at the age of 52, victim of cholera. Nicolas-Henri Jacob (Paris, 1782-1871) , grandson of painter and son of a carpenter, cousin of the famous cabinetmaker Georges Jacob, is the pupil in painting by Jacques-Louis David, in sculpture, Dupasquier and Morgan. Entering the service of Eugène de Beauharnais, in Milan, as a courtyard (between 1805 and 1814), he also made himself known in the drawing and the design of furniture, in particular for Marie Desarnaud or the Duchess of Berry. Back in France, in 1830 he opened his own drawing lesson in Paris in 1830, after having taught this art to the National Veterinary School of Alfort. Nevertheless, he was passionate very early for lithography, a new technique, and frequently exhibits his works with lounges under restoration (gold medal in 1834). From 1831 to 1854, he fell to the completion of the boards of the complete treaty of the anatomy of the man of Bourgery, becoming a real scientific collaborator: he heads a team of around twenty designers and lithographers, including Jean- Baptiste Leveillé and Charlotte Hublier (his wife, also painter). He ended his career by sharing his activity between exhibitions during salons and the illustration in lithography of scientific works. He died in Paris on January 31, 1871. ___ Art and way bookstore 19 Route de Pithiviers 45300 Boynes France Member of Slam and Lila ( National union of the old and modern bookstore / International League for the Ancient Bookstore) Ilab (International League of Antiquarian Booksellers) English Spoken Please do hesitate to contact us If you have any Inquiry The greatest care is given to the description of the works, However, involuntary errors can be made.
