UP FOR AUCTION: RARE BOOK: AMERICAN COAST PILOT 6th Edition by Edmund M. Blunt and Captain Lawrence Furlong, Published by E. M. Blunt, Newburyport, MA, USA, 1809 ( Title Page missing; Top of numerous pages state "American Coast Pilot" and "6 Edit"; see pics; Preface says 6th edition, advertisements at end of book state "Newburyport, June, 1809", maps are dated 1806 and 1809.) Leather Book, 389 pages, This is an antique, original, 1809 book for mariners to navigate the East Coast of the United States. It has many nautical explanations, descriptions, sailing charts, courses, and distances. This book has all of its 15 maps (5 of them are folding maps). Even though the book is missing its Title Page, the top of numerous pages state "American Coast Pilot" and "6 Edit" (see pics); The Preface says 6th edition, the advertisements at the end of book state "Newburyport, June, 1809", and the maps are dated 1806 and 1809. The Table of Contents and "Directions for the Binder" are present. The "Directions for the Binder" lists the 15 maps in the book (see pic). My on-line research found this to be a very rare, 6th Edition; it is just the third edition to include any maps. A former owner (who signed the book in 1844) was NICHOLAS SPARKS of Boston, who I could not identify from on-line research. Included with the book is a hand-written note I found inside. "Stephen Sylvester" wrote the note, which gives directions for sailing into Cape Fear, NC, from the River and over the Bar. See ebay pics above for actual book. This is a nice, vintage, legible, interesting, antique, leather book. Fair Condition [ Front leather cover is chipped at top edge and corners, spine-leather-covering is cracking vertically with small pieces missing (see pics), Rear cover is present-but-separated from binding, Rear cover is missing large pieces at top and nearly half of its leather covering, Front endpaper has scribbles and name of former 1844 Boston owner ("Nicholas Sparks"), Title Page is missing (book starts at Preface Page iii), last 150 pages have a 3"x1" dampstain on lower outside corner, last 100 pages have a dark smoke-stain at top, pages are easily readable but have a few finger smudges throughout text, Page 190 folding map of Long Island Sound is fully present-but-4/5-of map-is-separated from text, maps have some small stains and browning (see pics above), rear hinge is delicate; otherwise, book is very legible, strongly printed, complete with all text except Title Page/Copyright Page, and book has all of its 15 orig maps (Printed on heavy paper stock and quite worthy of being mounted & framed). ] 389 pages + 3 pgs Publisher's ads, approx. 9 inches x 5.5" x 1.75", full leather covers, Full Leather Book Welcome international ebay shoppers.
