Uncommon to see complete in four volumes, including the scarce map volume. Bound by Wood & Sloane, Liverpool. Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece, eleven colour plates, and forty-eight monochrome plates. Volume II illustrated with a colour frontispiece, eleven colour plates, and forty-six monochrome plates. Volume III illustrated with a colour frontispiece, twenty-seven monochrome plates, and in-text plans. The scarce map volume contains a total of seven large folding maps. Collated, complete. An in-depth look into the activities of the Royal Navy during their long history, an important and comprehensive study on the Royal Marines and their predecessors. Including extensive studies on the Napoleonic Wars, the heyday of the British Navy. The third volume focuses solely on the battles and victories of the Royal Marines during the First World War and immediate aftermath. By Colonels Cyril Field and H. E. Blumberg. Blumberg was a Royal Marines officer, and the Adjutant-General Royal Marines. Volumes I and II with a foreword by Admiral of the Fleet, Earl Beatty. CONDITION In a quarter morocco with cloth to the boards. Externally, smart. Light bumping to the extremities. Very light rubbing to the joints and extremities. A few light marks to the boards. Small damp stain to the head of the front board of Volume II. Mark to the rear board of the map volume. Spots to the fore edges. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, scattered spots to Volumes I and II, fewer spots to Volume III. Light spots to the maps. Pages 231-234 of Volume I is detached but present. The occasional pencil line to the margins.     I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
