Description
This 1907 Full Leather German ELBERFELDER, or Darby bible. The translator wrote about this German translation effort: " In the issue of this translation, the purpose is not to offer to the man of letters a learned work, but rather to provide the simple and unlearned reader with as exact a translation as possible." It has both Old & New Testaments, measures approx. 6 3/4 inches wide by 10 1/4 inches high, has Gold Gilt Decorations to covers, Gold Gilt Spine w/Floral Decoration, Gold Gilt Dentelles (decorated part of inside edges of front/rear boards), & all page edges are heavy Gold Gilt. The book has been professionally rebacked, but it was not dated when it was done. "Rebacked" means that a professional book binder carefully removed the pages from the outer binding, laid down new leather or sometimes thick cloth and reattaches the pages into the binding giving it a sort of new spine and integrity to the strength of the binding. My guess is it was done several decades ago. There looks like beginning separation to the boards where they meet the spine when looking from the outside, but looking at the gutters closely on the inside shows that they have some age & wear, but are still strong, holding firmly. There is some sporadic light age toning, light soiling, but no writing, no loose, torn or missing pages that I could find after going through it multiple times (althoughI could have missed something since it is over 1,300 pages, but I don't think I have). It is overall a very nice, Old Script German bible in full leather & rebacked for reading. This item is being sold by Books and Collectibles, LLC.
