With a folding map to volume I, and frontispieces to each volume. Drawing on a range of unpublished material from the Royal archives of Holland, the correspondences of the Orange-Nassau family, the Archives of the Simancas, and the department of the British Museum, Motley provides a detailed history of the fight for Dutch independence led by William the Silent. Whilst the first two volumes cover the period between 1584 and 1590, Lothrop skips to the renewed conflict between the Spanish Monarchy and the Dutch Commonwealth in the latter two volumes, detailing all the important episodes up to 1648. Motley was United Sates Minister to Austria under the Abraham Lincoln Administration, and helped to prevent Europe intervening in the American Civil War on the side of the Confederates. He was also a popular historian, and is best known for his works on Holland. CONDITION In a quarter calf binding over red marbled boards. Externally, smart. With some very light wear to the joints, and some light wear to the extremities. Volume III is missing half of its spine label, and Volume I is missing a little too. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are a little age-toned but clean with the exception of the endpapers, which are lightly foxed.
