Collated complete with six folding maps, eight portraits depicting various explorers such as David Livingstone and Jules Gerard, ten coloured plates and many other charming wood engravings, designed by Harden Melville and William Harvey and cut by H. Newsom Woods. Rebound in half morocco. The work has also been subsequently rebacked. This fascinating work of hunting and natural history by journalist and novelist James Greenwood discusses the history, habits and physiology of a number of species of big game, including tigers, elephants, hippos and leopards. The work also offers information regarding the methods of their hunting including weaponry and tactical movements. The work is particularly noted for its discussion regarding deer hunting, with anecdotal evidence regarding the capacity of the white tail deer to heal from extremely serious wounds. The work is an intricate and profusely illustrated work regarding both natural history and hunting, with this copy being the first edition, complete with many plates and folding maps. CONDITION Rebound in half morocco with marbled boards. Externally very smart with slight rubbing to the boards and extremities. Scattered spotting to pastedown and endpapers. The odd mark to the board. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with marginal age toning, handling marks and the odd spot, heavier to the first and last few pages.     I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
