Ten Years in Oregon, by D. Lee and J. H. Frost Ten Years in Oregon. Lee, D[aniel] and Frost, J[oseph] H. New York: Authors, J. Collard Printer, 1844. The authors, who were with the Oregon Mission of the Methodist Episcopal Church, spent time in Oregon Country. The book has several chapters about the early history of the area, and the rest is about the work of Jason Lee (Daniel Lee's uncle) and the missionaries among the Indians. Much detail about the various tribes of Oregon and Washington, plus an account of Lee's trip to Hawaii. Daniel Lee came to Oregon in 1834; Frost came to Oregon by sea arriving in 1840. There are five pages of examples of three different Columbia River region Indian dialects - Killemook, Clatsop, Checalish. Folding map with native tribes, forts and missions, including Fort Vancouver noted. Title page illustrated with an image of an albatross. Bound in full leather with gilt titles in a red leather band on the spine. Light foxing inside front and back covers and endpapers, light toning on a few pages, cover corners bumped. Overall, a handsome, very good copy, sold and tight.
