Description

History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Edward Gibbon, Esq., with Notes by the Rev. H. H. Milman Gibbon, with Maps. Four volume set published by Harper & Brothers (New York), 1844, octavo. Bound in leather over boards with marbled text block edges. The first three volumes each have one fold-out map which are intact. Seemingly a hard to find early edition of this work. Complete and tightly bound, however leather has corner/edge wear, scuffing and some shedding. Wear to spine and labels as shown, with volume 2 spine label detached and laid inside the book. Leather at base of spine of Vol 1 is starting to detach, with some splitting of front board outside (still tight inside). "1844 Set of 4" written in pencil on front endpaper. Endpapers have heavy age toning, with some staining to text pages but generally they are clean. Substantial foxing to the volume 3 map. See the many photos I've provided.

Once seldom ever finds a publication of this nature in new or unused condition. I am very pleased with my purchase. Although a flat, the eBay, seller carefully wrapped and boxed my purchase, plus insuring safe and undamaged delivery. I am very pleased with my purchase and with this eBay transaction. A+
