Description

Original leatherbound first edition of Allgemeine Beschreibung der Erde und Ihrer Bewohner..., with fold-out double-hemisphere map of the world and county-by-county slave census of individual states in the U.S., published in Philadelphia, 1840. This book measures 20.4 x 14 cm [8" x 5½"] and is more than 2" thick, with 792 pages plus the map, which opens to 32 x 49.5 cm [12½" x 19½"]. The book's full title is Allgemeine Beschreibung der Erde und Ihrer Bewohner: Nebst einer kurzen Darstellung der Himmelskörper: Mit vielen Abbildungen und einer Illuminirten Weltkarte / Bearbeitet nach den Neuesten und Besten Quellen (General description of the earth and its inhabitants: In addition to a short representation of the celestial bodies: With many illustrations and an illuminated world map / edited according to the latest and best sources), by Eduard Theodor Bösche. The map, in original hand color, is titled Die Halbkugeln der Erde nach den Neuesten Geographischen Bestimmungen (The hemispheres of the earth according to the latest geographical information), by W. L. I. Kiderlen & Cie. of Philadelphia. The book has numerous woodcut engravings of physical features of the world and its people, along with detailed text covering its history and geography. There is coverage of individual states and territories in the U.S., along with the populations of various Indian tribes. Texas and California are still part of Mexico. This book was published in Philadelphia by Leineweber and Rex for the large German-speaking population of the United States and is dated 1840 on the title page. Condition: The leather cover boards are worn and detached. The gilt-embossed spine seal has a chip, and the spine itself is worn and frayed. An inscription from a previous owner is neatly written on the upper edge of the title page, and there's an old library stamp on the inside of the front cover. The interior pages are clean and sound, with no marks, rips, or tears. The fold-out map has some faint offsetting and minor toning in the corners; otherwise, bright and clean, on a heavyweight paper with no marks, rips, or tears. Excellent seller! Shipped the same day as I ordered. However, USPS apparently misplaced the package. Let me change excellent seller to exceptional seller because Charlie responded immediately to my inquiry when it was apparent something was wrong, he kept me updated on the progress, and as soon as USPS allowed him to file a missing mail claim he did. And that got the map moving in the system and finally in my hands. Safe, secure packaging, too. I highly recommend New World Maps! Thank you!

This vintage brochure was accurately described. It's like brand new with no damage whatsoever--excellent condition. The price for the brochure and shipping cost was fine. Packaging was excellent. The brochure was sent in a hard stock cardboard envelope, the brochure in a plastic sleeve inside. Shipping was fast. Very happy with this transaction and seller. I would love to find another item to purchase as good as this one.
