Atlas volume. Being volume four of a four volume set. With twenty plates; nineteen illustrating birth abnormalities in humans and animals and one with a table titled 'Hermaphrodismes'. Collated complete Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (December 16, 1805 – November 10, 1861) was a French zoologist and an authority on deviation from normal structure. He coined the term ethology. He was born in Paris, the son of Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire. In his earlier years he showed an aptitude for mathematics, but eventually he devoted himself to the study of natural history and of medicine, and in 1824 he was appointed assistant naturalist to his father. In 1832-1837 he published his great teratological work in three volumes, accompanied by this volume containing an explanation of the plates, twenty pages of medical illustrations and a table of contents referring to all four volumes. With previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown of one G. N. J. Sommer, MD. of Trenton, New Jersey. CONDITION Expertly rebound in a half cloth binding with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, generally smart with very slight shelfwear and bumping to extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Loss to rear pastedown, though this can be easily repaired. Some details of one plate have been neatly hand coloured. Slight age-toning to many pages, though most plates remain bright. Slight marginal tidemarks to last few pages. Some scattered spotting throughout as usual. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.

The shipping was lightning fast, arriving in 3 days from UK to US. The book was packaged with extreme care, very important for an antique book. The overall condition of the book is also unbelievable for its age, even better than described. I’ve purchased numerous other books from this seller, and the quality and price have always been outstanding. Great eBay seller. Thanks!
