Complete in three volumes. A vivid account of the author's travels in North America during the years 1827 and 1828. Captain Basil Hall was a noted traveller, author, and naval officer, who travelled across the globe. He served in the Napoleonic Wars, even interviewing Napoleon on St. Helena in 1817. In 1827, Hall embarked on a two year tour of North America with his wife. Together they explored the United States and Canada widley, resulting in a travel work which details many of the larger cities, and smaller provincial areas. The work provides an interesting commentary on the States and Canada, at a time when English interest in North America was great. This work caused some controversy when first published due to the author's criticisms of American society. However, Hall was determined to learn about the Americans from their own, avoiding the American travels works which had preceded his. Volume I is illustrated with a folding map to the frontispiece. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.

The shipping was lightning fast, arriving in 3 days from UK to US. The book was packaged with extreme care, very important for an antique book. The overall condition of the book is also unbelievable for its age, even better than described. I’ve purchased numerous other books from this seller, and the quality and price have always been outstanding. Great eBay seller. Thanks!
