Marsh, John. New York: Vanderpool & Cole, 1827. First edition. Marsh (1788-1868) was pastor of the Congregational Church in Haddam, MA, and later associated with the American Temperance Society. He entered Yale College at age 12 and graduated at age 16. The book is a religious history guide, with information on idolatry, wars, persecutions, prophets, superstitions, tongues, Luther, the Roman church, fanaticism, Mennonites, and much more. Numerous engravings and foldouts, including large color frontispiece folding map engraved by E. Huntington; folding map of Palestine or the Holy Land with the Divisions into Tribes; foldout historical and ecclesiastical chart also engraved by E. Huntington; and 12 handsome woodcut engravings. Hardcover, bound in full leather with gilt titles and designs on the spine. 4.5x7.5 inches, 429 pages plus 32 page history of the Jews at the rear. Very good condition, tightly bound. Frontispiece map has some edge folds, a 3-inch split at one of the folds and tear where it joins the spine -- but overall still quite good. Leather in nice condition with light rubbing.
