Sixth edition. Volume I is part of the first four volumes of an eight-volume set, which first appeared in 1786, the latter four of which were the 'New edition, with corrections and additions'. Volumes II, III and IV are part of this later edition. With two folding maps to volume I. Bookplate of Robert Duckle to front pastedowns. Complete in four volumes. CONDITION In half-calf bindings with marbled boards. Externally, sound, though with some rubbing and marks. Volumes I, III, and IV have spine labels missing. The remaining spine labels are lifting in places. Rubbing to the head and tail of the spine, with some slight loss. Ink signatures to the front endpaper of each volume. Five of the joints are starting. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with some scattered instances of foxing. Overall Condition: Good GLOSSARY OF TERMS Overall Condition (Dustwrapper condition rating is shown after that for the book itself, where a dustwrapper is present) Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear Very Good Indeed - Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy Very Good - Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy Good - Meaning not very good. Some more serious faults as will be described in the condition report under 'condition' Good Only - Meaning one or more faults that could really do with repair Fair - As with good only above but with other faults leaving a compromised copy even after repair Poor - Really bad and possibly seriously incomplete.     I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
