The first work is an 1816 edition of William Smith's translation of Xenophon's 'History of the Affairs of Greece', with a folding map frontispiece. The second work is and 1812 edition of Edward Spelman's translation of Xenophon's history of 'The Expedition of Cyrus into Persia'. Illustrated with a folding map frontispiece. The third work is Mr. Rooke's 1812 translation of Arrian's account of Alexander the Great's conquest of Persia. With the library bookplate of Repton School to the front pastedown, and their stamp to the title page of the first work. Two fascinating historical narratives by the Greek military leader, philosopher, and historian, who was elected commander of one of the biggest Greek mercenary armies of the Achaemenid Empire. For over two millennia, Xenophon's diverse talents fuelled the debate of whether to place him amongst history's greatest generals, historians or philosophers. CONDITION In a half morocco binding with paper covered boards. Joints starting, with boards firmly held. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Stamp to first title page. Pages generally bright, but with instances of spotting and foxing throughout, most concentrated to folding maps and first and last few pages of each volume.     I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
