Hawkesworth's Voyages, Set of 3 complete, 1773 An Account of the Voyages Undertaken by the Order of His present Majesty for Making Discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere and Successively Performed by Commodore Byron, Captain Wallis, Captain Carteret and Captain Cook in the Dolphin, the Swallow and the Endeavour. London: W. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1773. First edition. An important work; the second and third volume of which document Cook's first voyage commanding HMS Endeavor. -- Vol 2 focuses on Tahiti and observing the transit of Venus; the third volume on New Zealand and Australia. Cook's first voyage lasted from 1768 to 1771, and was the second European voyage to reach New Zealand and the first known Europeans to reach the east coast of Australia. Cook's expeditions established him as one of the great explorers of his day. Vol 1 details the voyages of Byron, Wallis and Carteret. Hawkesworth's Voyages was first issued in 2,000 sets of three volumes, then several months later a second issue of 2500 was published. This set is the first edition -- This is clear as the second edition has a "second edition preface" called for in the table of contents, which this set does not have. The books have been handsomely rebound in half leather and light brown cloth, with new endpapers, red leather bands, gilt titles and rules and five red bands. The text pages are in very good condition and easy to read. There may have been a little cropping of some pages when rebound, as a 1700s date next to a former owner's signature at top of title page of Vol 2 is cut off. As to the folding charts and engravings condition: Out of the 52 charts and illustrations called for, 18 are originals, 5 are missing, and 29 are professionally produced copies. Thus, there are 47 charts and illustrations in total. The copies have been expertly professionally reproduced on paper that looks very much like the original paper. In fact, it is difficult to tell the originals from the ones that were reproduced; the paper is just slightly thinner. All text pages are present. Four charts are detached; the huge (25x34 inches) important map of the Straits of Magellan is original, but is one of the ones detached. It has been professionally mended top left corner. **I can provide a listing of which illustrations and charts are copies and which original, if desired. My images show samples of both. Vol 1 calls for 21 charts and illustrations, of which one is missing, 10 are original and 11 are copies; Vol 2 calls for 22 charts and illustrations, of which 4 are missing, 5 are originals and 12 are copies; Vol 3 calls for 9 charts and illustrations, of which 3 are original and 6 are copies.
