His most famous works concern voyages in America, the West Indies, and the Caribbean. In 1730, Labat published an account of the voyages of Reynaud Desmarchais, a captain of slave ship that sailed exclusively between the African Gold Coast and the West Indies. ‘ Voyage du Chevalier des Marchais en Guinée’ describes many of the procedures and regulations that were involved in slave trade as well as the economic and commercial influence of slavery . In addition to discussions on slaves, Labat includes information on fish, animals, geography, and …sea monsters! (i.e. sharks).
